The scattering patterns were recorded using an EIGER2 R 1M detector (pixel size 75 µm). The wood sample was measured first in wet state (saturated with water; \"Wet\"), and then equilibrated at different relative humidities (RH) in the following order: 95% (\"RH95_1st\"), 85% (\"RH85\"), 70% (\"RH70\"), 50% (\"RH50_1st\"), 20% (\"RH20\"), 10% (\"RH10\"), 50% (\"RH50_2nd\"), 95% (\"RH95_2nd\"). The sample-to-detector distance was 0.4139 m in SAXS, and 0.1528 m for the first 4 conditions (until \"RH70\") and 0.1525 m for the remaining 5 conditions in WAXS. Beam center (in detector pixels) was at x=540.6, y=667.0 (except y=635.0 in \"RH70\") in SAXS and x=1540, y=1521 in WAXS.\r\n\r\nFor each of the 9 moisture conditions, files corresponding to 3 different processing steps are provided:\r\n\r\n\r\n\t\"_bgsub_saxs.txt\" and \"_bgsub_waxs.txt\" are ASCII files that contain the normalized and background-subtracted detector images (intensity in units mm^-1) corresponding to SAXS and WAXS, respectively. Pixels to be masked have the value \"nan\".\r\n\t\"_bgsub_saxs_pol90.txt\" and \"_bgsub_waxs_pol90.txt\" contain azimuthally regrouped images (90 bins in azimuthal angle) based on \"_bgsub_saxs.txt\" and \"_bgsub_waxs.txt\", respectively. PNG image files \"_bgsub_saxs_pol.png\" and \"_bgsub_waxs_pol.png\" are provided for reference.\r\n\t\"_bgsub_pol90_ibg.txt\" and \"_bgsub_waxs_pol90_vert_ibg.txt\" contain the equatorial and meridional anisotropic intensities, respectively, which were obtained from the azimuthally regrouped images by subtracting the isotropic scattering from the equatorial or meridional intensity (sector width 25°) at each value of the scattering vector q. The equatorial anisotropic intensities from SAXS and WAXS were merged by scaling the SAXS intensity, and the meridional anisotropic intensity is provided for the WAXS range only. Remote Sensing of Environment 247, 111955.\r\n\r\nThe dataset consists of biconical reflectance factors of 12 ground lichen species collected from southern Finland. The samples were collected in October-November 2019, and the nadir-view reflectance factors were measured in a dark laboratory using an ASD FieldSpec 4 spectroradiometer (serial number 18641). The spectral range of measurements was 350-2500 nm, and spectral resolution was 3 nm at 700 nm and 10 nm at 1400 and 2100 nm. For common mat-forming lichen species, spectra of 8-10 samples of 250 cm2 size are reported, while for not mat-forming species, spectra of 3-5 samples of size 50 cm2 are reported. All samples were measured as fresh (brought from outside to inside and directly measured) and dry (two days in room temperature). Background cfMeDIP-seq is a low-cost method for determining the DNA methylation status of cell-free DNA and it has been successfully combined with statistical methods for accurate cancer diagnostics. We investigate the diagnostic classification aspect by applying statistical tests and dimension reduction techniques for feature selection and probabilistic modeling for the cancer type classification, and we also study the effect of sequencing depth. Methods We experiment with a variety of statistical methods that use different feature selection and feature extraction methods as well as probabilistic classifiers for diagnostic decision making. We test the (moderated) t-tests and the Fisher’s exact test for feature selection, principal component analysis (PCA) as well as iterative supervised PCA (ISPCA) for feature generation, and GLMnet and logistic regression methods with sparsity promoting priors for classification. Probabilistic programming language Stan is used to implement Bayesian inference for the probabilistic models. Results and conclusions We compare overlaps of differentially methylated genomic regions as chosen by different feature selection methods, and evaluate probabilistic classifiers by evaluating the area under the receiver operating characteristic scores on discovery and validation cohorts. While we observe that many methods perform equally well as, and occasionally considerably better than, GLMnet that was originally proposed for cfMeDIP-seq based cancer classification, we also observed that performance of different methods vary across sequencing depths, cancer types and study cohorts. Background Developing machine learning models to support health analytics requires increased understanding about statistical properties of self-rated expression statements used in health-related communication and decision making. To address this, our current research analyzes self-rated expression statements concerning the coronavirus COVID-19 epidemic and with a new methodology identifies how statistically significant differences between groups of respondents can be linked to machine learning results. Methods A quantitative cross-sectional study gathering the “need for help” ratings for twenty health-related expression statements concerning the coronavirus epidemic on an 11-point Likert scale, and nine answers about the person’s health and wellbeing, sex and age. The study involved online respondents between 30 May and 3 August 2020 recruited from Finnish patient and disabled people’s organizations, other health-related organizations and professionals, and educational institutions (n = 673). We propose and experimentally motivate a new methodology of influence analysis concerning machine learning to be applied for evaluating how machine learning results depend on and are influenced by various properties of the data which are identified with traditional statistical methods. Results We found statistically significant Kendall rank-correlations and high cosine similarity values between various health-related expression statement pairs concerning the “need for help” ratings and a background question pair. With tests of Wilcoxon rank-sum, Kruskal-Wallis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) between groups we identified statistically significant rating differences for several health-related expression statements in respect to groupings based on the answer values of background questions, such as the ratings of suspecting to have the coronavirus infection and having it depending on the estimated health condition, quality of life and sex. Our new methodology enabled us to identify how statistically significant rating differences were linked to machine learning results thus helping to develop better human-understandable machine learning models. Conclusions The self-rated “need for help” concerning health-related expression statements differs statistically significantly depending on the person’s background information, such as his/her estimated health condition, quality of life and sex. With our new methodology statistically significant rating differences can be linked to machine learning results thus enabling to develop better machine learning to identify, interpret and address the patient’s needs for well-personalized
